Metallic Test

Hello World!
I'm sure you should had known about metallic painting. However, there are people using market ready metallic paint, and there are also people using silver base and clear paint on top.

But what's their different?

So, I had did a research, and an experiment for comparison today.
Before going in it, I will first give them a name/term for each kind of method.

Metallic Painting - Ready-made Metallic Paint
Candy Painting - Silver Base > Clear Color
Pearl Painting - Ready-made Pearl Paint

Of course, there maybe people using other names for them. But for this blog, I will be using these names in the future.

-------------------------------
Alright, Let's get into the Main topic

First, I had tried the Metallic Painting with different bases. We can see that using a black base will be darker, and the white base is much more lighter. This is due to the light reflection on the spoon surface. I had tried on a silver base as well, where it came out with a similar result of the black based, but a bit brighter.

Next is Candy Painting. I had tried 2 basic base, where both came out a different results. The white based silver has a lighter blue, and the black based silver has a darker blue.
Lastly, I tested Pearl Painting for comparison too.

From all these results, we could see that Metallic painting has visible silver particles on the surface (maybe quite difficult to see in the pic). While Candy painting gives a reflective color.
Though both methods are usually categorised as metallic painting, but I guess it is actually quite confusing to say which is the correct metallic painting.
Both having different results, so I think it is actually up to you to choose which method to use.

I had found a video from the Youtube, by the Master Kawaguchi.

Maybe you want to have a look at it too.

More on Pearl Painting.
Pearl Painting are paints that's whitish (due to the raw material), and the color that we could see is actually a reflection of the visible/white light. When the visible/white light is reflected from the surface, it is dispersed into the color spectrum (similar to rainbow). Where the other color is absorbed by the base color, and only the desired color is reflected and gets into our eyes.
That's the reason why black base is mostly used for Pearl Painting.

So what will happen if it was a white base? or a silver base?

Let's see the results.

As we see in the picture above, there is almost no visible blue color on both of the spoons.
A white base will reflect partially of the other colors with the desired color, which cause it to be almost white. When we look at the surface closely, there is actually a weak blue color reflected.
However, a silver base can't absorb the unwanted colors, and almost all the colors are reflected back into white light. That's why there is (totally) no effect on a silver base, as seen in the picture.
-------------------------------------------------------

To conclude, the methods are depends on what effect you want to bring out.
There is no right or wrong, just use the one you preferred.

It is recommended to do your own test and look at them with your naked eyes.
As these are photos taken by camera, they will be affected by the white balance, exposure, surrounding lighting.... To have the Best view of it, I strongly recommend you to try them.

Hope this will help on more info about Metallic, Candy and Pearl painting.
